RECOLLECTIONS FROM THE MAN AT 101
We moved here from Ashford in October 1975 when our eldest son was seven months. At that time several residents were ‘the originals’ who had moved in when the houses were new. We all had young children and more were born in the next few years. We got to know the neighbours on the daily walk down the road to Warren Road School. Until our daughter came along it seemed to be all boys on our side of Warren Road and all girls in the houses backing on to us in Cloonmore Avenue.
You could set your watch by the hourly 493 green country bus that ran up and down Warren Road as it kept excellent time and often on the way home from Orpington Station the driver would let me off outside my house – like having your own taxi! Over the years the train service from Chelsfield has greatly improved with our 20 minute fast peak train frequency starting in 1985.
We remember the gales of October 1987 which left Warren Road blocked with trees, but we all got together and cleared the road – rather like an earlier version of our Greenspace activities.
